Preparing for surgery comes with many challenges, but for those living on Navajo Nation, accessing essential equipment can make recovery even more difficult. Without the proper support, simple tasks can become obstacles to healing. That’s where community leaders like Diné Naazbaa Partnership (DNP) step in, ensuring veterans have what they need to regain their independence and move forward with confidence.
Marine veteran (’74-’76) Gilbert Sam knew that recovering from his upcoming knee surgery would be challenging, especially without a wheelchair-accessible ramp at his home. Wanting to secure the support he needed, he contacted DNP for assistance.

Ever wondered what $10 could do? It can save the lives of veterans like the one you're reading about in this story. Donate $10 a month and help us reach veterans before a crisis occurs. Together, we can do better. Our veterans deserve better.
DNP Community Coordinator Karen Shirley immediately connected Gilbert with Paralyzed Veterans of America (PVA) in Phoenix, AZ. Within a week, PVA responded, offering to assist directly. Karen ensured Gilbert had the necessary contact information, and during DNP’s Standdown event, he and his wife, Laurie, shared their gratitude. Not only could they arrange for a ramp, but Gilbert also received a walker, a walker with a seat, a shower chair, and a food box with a case of water.
With these essential resources, Gilbert can now focus on his recovery more efficiently and comfortably.
